Capitalistic exploitation on subcultures, like goth, punk, and rock. Namely, how so called against-the grain-movements were made mainstream and profited off of, slowly stripping its original message and "domesticating" it. Apparently this process has been repeated and even refined into a science, evidently by how modern versions of these subcultures are more tamed compared to the older generations
- hipsters back then want to leave society completely
- rocks and punks despise society but are not willing to leave it
In short, the subculture is anticipated and is profited off of, like a staged human resistance by some in a higher position to create the illusion of progress only for the original status quo to be silently restored afterwards. After all, in the eyes of capitalism, it does not matter what ideals (mostly) is held as long as it profits, and exploiting these subcultures certainly do profit. The irony being, the rejection of money and yet its treatment as an all too important resource. But there are likely exceptions to this, maybe somewhere much further.
